Volunteers Needed!

Are you proud to be a resident of High Park and willing to help keep the community active and vibrant?

Get involved with the High Park Tenants’ Association!

We are looking for volunteers to help us advocate on behalf of the tenants in Minto’s High Park Village, Vertica’s Grenadier Square, and Park Property’s 299 Glenlake. Typical commitment is only 2-5 hours per month depending on what we’re doing at he time.

The HPTA’s primary function is to fight above guideline rent increases and liaise with the owners of local tenant properties to ensure that important issues are being handled appropriately. The more people actively involved as volunteers, the bigger the impact we will have in keeping our community a fabulous, vibrant, and affordable place to live.

If you are interested in getting involved, please email volunteer@hpta.ca, tell us a bit about yourself, what roles you might be interested in (see more below), and your reasons for wanting to get involved.

We look forward to working with you!

What we need

Below are the various areas we are looking for help. We will also be looking for chairs for committees as indicated to help lead activities and provide a voice on the board of directors. The board meets every 2-3 months and communicates regularly by e-mail.

Building Reps

We need building representatives to help us stay connected to each building.

What do they do?

  • Flyering, speaking with tenants to hear their concerns, occasionally collecting donations.

If you are a current building rep and would like to continue, please let us know by replying to this e-mail.

AGI (Above Guideline Increase) Review Committee

This committee oversees our primary activity by reviewing management company applications for above guideline rent increases and providing finds to our paralegal.

We’re looking for:

  • 2 volunteers with bookkeeping/accounting, legal experience, or knowledge and awareness in rent review legislation
  • 1 person with an engineering background for special advisement on specific activities

Fundraising Committee

This is a new committee that will help to ensure that the HPTA maintains the funding needed to hire our paralegal for AGI’s and can continue general operations. We will need a chair for this committee but are accepting as many people as would like to help out.

Communications & Media

The Communications & Media Committee will help to facilitate HPTA communications through e-mail, the website, and our upcoming Facebook page. We will also work together to craft communications and determine if the HPTA newsletter should be continued, and if so, in what form.

C&M is also the primary contact point for media inquiries.

What we’re looking for:

  • 2-4 people with a flair for communications and/or an interest in technology (website)

Tenant Advocacy Committee

The tenant advocacy committee monitors the HPTA general email account to respond to general inquiries, liaises with building reps. This committee requires both a great sympathy for tenant concerns and the need for the HPTA to maintain a healthy relationship with management.

What we’re looking for:

  • 2-3 people to help monitor the HPTA general inbox and response
  • A chair for this group that would meet monthly with management and report back to the board of directors.

Governance & Finance

What we’re looking for:

  • 1-3 people for a one-time governance project: Review bylaws and operations to help make the association more efficient going forward.
  • 1 person for finance help: basic reconciling of expenses and revenue for review by the board of directors every 1-2 months. There are very few sources of revenue and expense, so this should be relatively easy for anyone with a finance background.

Send an e-mail to volunteer@hpta.ca if you’re interested!
